Today’s Inktober entry definitely isn’t my favorite, but it’s okay. I referenced Goya’s The Dog which is my favorite painting of all time. It’s nowhere near as beautiful as the source, but it was fun to draw and I enjoyed making it which is what counts.

Here’s day 1 through 14 laid out. It makes me feel accomplished to see it all together like this. I’ve worked hard.

When you think of the word “successful,” who’s the first person that comes to mind and why?

My husband is successful in my eyes. He didn’t finish high school and his first job after leaving was working in a computer repair shop. The owner taught him how to repair Macs and he took that knowledge to his next job which was at another computer repair place. They put him to work repairing iPods. Slowly he worked up and eventually got to a point where he was repairing all sorts of Apple products and doing it for big companies like Weta (we were living in Wellington). This led to a job at 20 years old working at a prestigious advertising agency doing IT. No degree, just hands on training and experience to get him the position. Eventually he did go to college and really struggled the entire time, but managed to come out of it with a computer science degree. When he moved to the USA with me, he got his first job here doing IT work at a cancer research lab. He worked his way up to programming and eventually got the title of software engineer. So he’s climbed his way from a tiny repair shop in Auckland fixing broken Macs to doing software engineer work at a world renowned cancer research institute.
